Howdy festive Corn Doggies!
Mrs. Corn Dog and I went to the Tavern on the Green Tree Lighting Ceremony last night:
Please join us on December 2nd for the annual Tavern On The Green Tree Lighting Ceremony. This yearly event is in partnership with the West Side Campaign Against Hunger, and features Christmas Carolers, light bites, hot chocolate, and festive holiday cheer. 5:30pm-8pm, complimentary admission.
In my best Scrooge voice...
[grumble] I don't know what a ceremony is - this seemed like a bunch of folks getting together to be festive around a bar and free appetizers to watch a tree get lit up. [/grumble]
(We would definitely go again!)
I am assuming the Ceremony is over for this year (put it on your 2025 calendar for a reminder), however I'm also assuming the festive area is still open to the public?
(Or maybe it's just a good excuse to have dinner at The Tavern on the Green.)
That image!
C'mon!
Who isn't getting into the New York City festive mood after seeing that!?
Side note: I shot this with my phone, after a few frustrating moments fiddling with my big camera that I brought with me so I could take amazing-er photos however at the last minute I though it'd be great to swap in a 50mm lens and all hell broke loose. Still there?
A few notes and tips...
The entrance to the Ceremony is not the same entrance to the restaurant
(The Ceremony entrance is around the corner to your left of the restaurant entrance*)
We arrived relatively early (before 6:00pm) so there were some empty seats at the bar
The bar gets busy, quickly
The stools are VERY HIGH (helpful to know after a cocktail or two)
There really isn't any free appetizers; I mean, sure there are folks walking around with trays that once had food
All the money spent at the Ceremony goes back to a good charity (helping the homeless)
The carolers were great!
The Ceremony is very festive!
The backdrop of the city on a clear night is amazing!
The tree lighting was...
* I mention this because it reminded me of the time we went to a cocktail bar and had two very lovely cocktails. When we went to order a third drink, the bartender explained to us, pretentiously, that they only served two drinks per day per customer. That's how it felt when we were told the entrance was around the corner.
... um, so, we didn't stay for the tree lighting. Crazy! I know! However it was cold, we were getting hungry and we didn't really want another drink while waiting for the tree to light and while we were cold and hungry.
(The Ceremony was so festive, it looks like the tree is lit in the image above. I can assure you - it was very not lit.)
We walked around the ceremony a bit, made some naughty comments, then dipped.
We then walked down 67th Street debating on whether to stop somewhere on Columbus Avenue for dinner or head home and heat up some homemade turkey enchiladas.
(Spoiler: We went to El Mitote for dinner, then had the enchiladas for lunch this afternoon.)
